That’s the thing about art, anyone can do it! It had been about 15 years since I last picked up the paintbrush. I was apprehensive to say the least. How is it going to turn out? Can I still do this? I was going through a particularly hard time in my life. I found my only solace was taking a long walk around the neighborhood. This one particular evening I was thinking about what it would be like to see the Northern Lights. Obviously during a pandemic it would be hard to do any form of traveling. Then it got me thinking about that blank canvas I had sitting in my bedroom. I had always wanted to paint the Northern Lights. I guess I found my happy compromise because by the time I got home I broke out my easel and started painting up a storm. I watched a brief YouTube video on how to do a background. I learned a few tricks about how to create horizon. How do you paint the Northern Lights and do it any justice? You don’t. That’s the thing about painting, it can look any way you want it to.
Funny thing about artists, we're never quite satisfied with our work. Why is it we expect every painting to turn out exactly the way we want it to? As I was painting the sky in my picture it occurred to me that I missed a few spots. As I brought up my paintbrush to fix it I realized I kinda liked it as it was. I liked the imperfection. Not only that for the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t thinking about what was going on in my life. Life is like art, it never turns out the way you want it to. There is beauty in the chaos and the imperfections are what make the picture complete. I believe everybody has the ability to create. That’s why I chose my name “The artist within”. We all have something inside us that sparks our creativity. I’m not the type to judge how people express themselves. I also believe you don't have to be perfect in order to enjoy doing something you love. I don’t expect my art to hang in the fanciest museums. I don’t expect everybody to like it. That’s not why I do it. Eventually when life beats you up a little bit, you stop caring what people think and do what you love. This is me doing what I love regardless of the outcome. This is me chasing my dream. I hope you join me on my journey and maybe just maybe it might spark your own adventure. The Artist Within

As The Artist Within, I use the love for my small town of Port Perry as inspiration for my work. As a long time resident and artist I love to showcase its vivid landscapes and bold colors. There is beauty in our own backyard! Archives
