I started thinking after mom and I spoke... criticism comes whether we want it to or not. Usually it's uninvited opinions from people who think they know better. You get used to it over time and it makes you tougher. As you gain more confidence, all those jabs roll off your shoulder. It shouldn't matter what other people think.
Any artist knows that we are our own worst critic. Uninvited criticism is pretty unnecessary. If you're like me, you walk by the picture a hundred times wondering what's off about it. Eventually it occurs to you and you fix it. Confidence is making mistakes and learning from them. I always tell myself, "I'll figure it out. I always do." You're going go hear criticism whether you want it to or not. I'm always grateful for helpful criticism from people who are legitimately more experienced than I. I don't listen to the "nay-sayers" that wonder why you choose to be an artist and to "get a real job". That goes in one ear and out the other. Those who want to see you succeed will work with you, not against you. There's a reason why I will always encourage people to chase their dream. Everyone needs a cheerleader in their life. We just need one person to encourage and support us. There are so many people telling us "no" that we just need a bit of positivity. I'm incessantly positive and there's no amount of criticism that'll ever change that. I know what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. That's all anyone needs to know. Happy painting! The Artist Within

As The Artist Within, I use the love for my small town of Port Perry as inspiration for my work. As a long time resident and artist I love to showcase its vivid landscapes and bold colors. There is beauty in our own backyard! Archives
